Reign of Terror - The South Hill Rapist

I have read "Son" and I currently work for a local hospital and we work with the criminal insane. I do not believe that Kevin Coe should ever be released. I hope that the Spokane County prosecuting attorneys can find just cause to file the civil suit, we do not need this man back in Spokane. I do not believe the man has been rehabilitated and needs to remain in a secure environment till his death.

Introducing The iTaser: MP3 Player Meets Hip, Portable Shock Device

Deborah Kerr in The King and I recommended whistling a happy tune when afraid, but now fearful Americans can sing along to their favourite tracks while shooting anyone who causes them consternation with a 50,000-volt electric charge.

The annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, which is expected to receive more than 140,000 visitors this week, is no stranger to bizarre gadgets but the iTaser - as it has been dubbed - must rank as one of the oddest. It combines a Taser stun gun, used by 12,000 law enforcement and security forces, including the Metropolitan police, with an MP3 player and earphones.

As to which tracks anyone toting such a device might download on to the 1GB player that is integrated into the gun's holster, anything by Sparks or Frank Zappa must be fairly high on the list.

Obits already written for new Falcon

Its faster variants are among the cars to which I'm most looking forward to driving - that is when Ford Australia ceases this insufferable dance of the veils routine and lets the car speak for itself. We can be confident that the new one will be improved in every respect. It'll still be a Falcon, though, and that's the problem.

Things have moved on a bit since football always meant a game played with an oval ball, meat pies were the national dish, Skippy was on prime-time telly and everyone drove either a Ford or Holden.

Private buyers want quality imports such as the Mazda3 and compact SUVs and they want them in ever increasing numbers. Last year the average weekly cost of running a Commodore or Falcon was almost $268, a 40 per cent hike since 2002.

Petrol prices haven't helped, but lousy resale is guaranteed because the majority of such cars are knocked out at a bargain price to fleets.

Fired teacher sues Manatee district

Cropsey was cleared of charges she tampered with her students' Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, a crime under Florida law.

When asked to participate in an interview with school district investigators, Cropsey refused because her attorney would not be allowed to attend with her.

The school board then fired her for insubordination.

Cropsey, who now teaches at a charter school, has a pending case appealing the school board's decision in the Second District Court of Appeal.

School board attorney John Bowen said Cropsey's lawsuit is groundless.

"She hasn't been denied any rights. We are aware of her entire situation," Bowen said Tuesday. "She had a full and fair hearing before the school board and her employment was terminated.

AMD devises telehealth kit for first-responders

N. CHELMSFORD, Mass. AMD Telemedicine (www.amdtelemedicine.com), a telemedicine equipment leader, announced that it has created a Deployable Telemedicine Kit and is working to identify disaster organizations, first-responder teams and medical facilities around the world that would be able to deploy and/or utilize this type of medical equipment in the event of a disaster.

With the kits, healthcare providers in the field would have the ability to send photo images of inner ear/nose/throat, trauma to extremities, soft tissue injuries, captured ultrasound images, digital 12-lead electrocardiograms, digital lung capacity reports, and heart or lung sounds.

The specialist in the field would then send the information to a medical specialist via satellite, Internet, or Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDN), providing an evaluation and/or consultation for these remote victims using live videoconferencing or store and forward applications.

SO FAR, SO GOOD FOR SHEETS (5:38 p.m. ET)

This is a big year for Brewers starter Ben Sheets to prove he can stay healthy. He's averaged a mere 135 innings over the past three seasons, and his extended absences last year contributed to Milwaukee finishing two games behind the Cubs in the National League Central. Sheets made only 24 starts because of hamstring and finger injuries.

Sheets made his 2008 Cactus League debut Saturday and retired six straight Colorado Rockies on an economical 15 pitches. So far, so good.

Among other things, Sheet said he felt extremely comfortable with his arm slot -- something he had difficulty finding last season.

"It seems like it would be an easy thing to remember once you get in it,'' Sheets said. "But we searched and searched last year and I could never find it.''

Sheets, 29, will make $11 million this season in the final year of a four-year, $38.5 million deal.

Slaughterhouse video prompts unprecedented beef recall

This undercover video of sick and crippled cows being brought to slaughter in an abattoir in southern California has prompted the largest recall of beef in US history, (writes Will Pavia).

The US Department of Agriculture yesterday ordered that 143 million lb of beef from the slaughterhouse be recalled. Officials estimate that some 37 million lbs of the recalled meat had been heading to schools across America though they fear that most of it will have already been eaten.

The abattoir run by the Hallmark Meat Packing Company, an associate and supplier of Westland Meat Company, which provides meat for America’s National School Lunch Programme, is now the subject of an an animal-abuse investigation.

Ed Schafer, the US Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer said his department had evidence that Westland did not routinely contact its veterinarian when cattle lost the power to walk after passing inspection, violating health regulations.

Radio & TV Talk

My sources say Citadel, the new owners, are interested in bringing Imus on air at 106.7 and perhaps turn it into a talk station. Another format change could be oldies. I presume they have to keep NASCAR around regardless.

No word yet from Rick Mack, the general sales manager who had to dole out the bad news. I've also tried to reach Weaver, Buck and Rhubarb. I'll post comments from them if I get them. KIcks is now using some weekend jock while Eagle is now being automated with no jocks at all.

"It's horrible but it's the radio business," Mitchell said, matter of factly. He was not under contract and is ready to work anywhere else Monday. In preparation for this, he already has built his own production company.

Citadel, the Kicks/Eagle owner, yesterday reported a nasty loss nationwide and promised swift changes.

Bridge toll could span 59 years

It could be ten more years. It could be twenty more years," he said, referring to how long the Turnpike Authority may have to extend the bridge toll. "It depends upon how much traffic grows. The more traffic grows, the more revenue you have. There are a lot of variables" involved.

One thing is certain. Little, if any, state funding will be available to pay for the project, DeWitt said.

"The transportation financing problems in the state are quite large," he said. "That is why the toll authority was created. This (bridge) is really being designed to be a user-fee (funded) project."

Increasing the toll could be an option, but that, too, may be unlikely. The Turnpike Authority conducted a study that evaluated projected traffic on the bridge over a typical 39-year bonding period.

Pushing PC nonsense

Unless the critics have come up with some way to inform the American people of the details of highly secret intelligence programs — without, in the process, informing our enemies — they owe us an explanation of why they are trying to undermine efforts to identify individuals who may be planning catastrophic terrorist attacks against their fellow Americans.

Further, unless the critics can persuade us that they are absolute idiots, they owe us an explanation of why they are trying so hard to provide massive financial disincentives to other corporations that might be inclined to cooperate with our government in its efforts to protect us from the next attack.

Let's assume for a moment that congressional critics succeed in blocking immunity and AT&T winds up having to compromise our intelligence programs in court and then give the ACLU a windfall profit of a few million dollars — costs that will of course ultimately be passed on to American consumers in the form of higher rates.

AVST Adds New SIP Integrations to CallXpress

Applied Voice & Speech Technologies (AVST) announced it has added new SIP integrations to its flagship CallXpress unified communications platform. UPDATE: GM Names New President/COO, CFO

Chief Financial Officer Frederick "Fritz" A. Henderson was named president and chief operating officer at General Motors Corp. (GM) as the company revived a tradition of one person holding both positions.

Ray Young, 46, currently group vice president-finance, will replace Henderson, 49, as CFO.

Neither was available for comment.

GM Chief Executive Rick Wagoner said the No. 1 U.S. auto maker is re- establishing its tradition of having a president/COO with Henderson's appointment.

"Fritz Henderson is the right person to assume this role. He's had a broad range of experiences in leading three of our regions and in a number of other GM businesses over the years, and he's made a tremendous contribution in each role, " Wagoner said.

About Young, he said, "Ray Young brings a wealth of finance and operating experience to the CFO role, including leading GM do Brasil to record business results in his most recent assignment."

Henderson and Young will report to Wagoner.
